Q. Should I come by myself?
A. Absolutely! Come by yourself, with a spouse, a friend or with a group! The auction is a fun, community-building and mingling event. If you don’t know many people in the SBA community, this is a great way to meet them.
Q. Who can attend?
A. We welcome all SBA parents, alumni, faculty, staff, and friends. The auction is an adult-only event. It’s a great way to get to know people in a fun, relaxed environment.
Q. What should I wear?
A. Havana Nights is a fun, casual, Latin-themed event. There is no pressure—come dressed in comfortable attire for a casual fun night out! This could mean anything from a colorful dress to khakis and a Tommy Bahama shirt---stop worrying about it and come enjoy yourself! Click here for some inspiration!
Q. What time should I get there?
A. The auction begins at 6:00 p.m. so please plan on arriving at that time to take in all of the fabulous silent auction items and enjoy your friends.
Q. What is the menu for the auction?
It will be fabulous, fun, and Cuban inspired. We have something for everyone---everything from Empanadas to Churros! You won’t go away hungry –trust us!
Q. Do I need to pay for drinks?
A. Of course not. We will greet you with an signature drink as well as passed hors d’oeuvres to start the night. There will be two bars in two separate locations of the venue to accommodate all of our guests, including a Rum tasting bar featuring fabulous Mojitos, Cuba Libres and samples of fine aged rums. *Please note that there is no smoking allowed on the Vanderbilt campus and cigars will have to be enjoyed after the event at another location. (But they make great props!)
Q. Is seating reserved?
A. Part of the auction fun is mingling with new and old friends alike. While our Copacabana lounge seating will be available for comfort, we are not reserving tables. Join in the fun, move around, and socialize with your SBA family! We will have a large number of high-top tables should you need to catch your breath from the excitement.
Q. I’ve never been to an auction—what is it like?
A. The auction is a fun, friendly event and an opportunity to mingle with new and old friends from SBA. It is a night out of great conversation, drinks and fabulous food, and an opportunity to show your support for the SBA HSA. Funds raised through the silent and live auction help to support the entire following year's operating budget for the HSA, which in turn supports students and faculty programs and events throughout the year. We can’t do what we do without your support, plain and simple. You will have an amazing time!
Q. How does the auction work?
A. There are two parts to the auction—a silent auction and a live auction.
Everyone attending will first check in and receive their bidding program package.
The Silent auction is open when you arrive and begins closing at 8:00p.m. Silent auction items are on display in 3 sections, marked by color and each item has a bid number on it. We are using paper bid sheets this year, back by popular demand!
At the end of the night, the winning bidder will take that item with them. An auction representative will bring the item to you at check-out. Please do not take the items off of the tables to avoid any confusion—we will bring them to you!
The Live auction will begin at 8:30. Even if you are not planning on bidding on anything in the live auction, please make sure you stay. It is so fun to watch and listen to our professional auctioneer work with the bidders. Live auction items will be highlighted during the event and will be listed in the program. Our auctioneer will feature the items one at a time and will announce the starting bid. Attendees are then given the chance to bid on the item using the back page of their program (paddle). The item is then awarded to the highest bidder.
Q. I’m new to the school and I am not sure what to expect.
A. It’s Okay! We’ve all been there. The auction is simply a welcoming, casual event and an awesome party. Come join the fun!
Q. Where do the proceeds from the auction go?
A. So glad you asked. One hundred percent of the auction proceeds go to support the Home School Association (HSA), which in turn supports faculty and student activities and programs throughout the year. We cannot run the programs that we run without your support---everything from the Fall Fair and Father/Daughter Dance & Mother/Son Event to the Jr. High Dance, Open Houses & Graduation Receptions. We also select a Fund-A-Project each year. This year we are looking to add two more basketball hoops to the Maria Morffi Rodriguez Multi Purpose Room - as well as a portable stage! If there is anything left, we hope to gift the school funds for the "Breezeway Fund" to build a breezeway from the MPR to the dining room door!
Q. What types of items will be auctioned?
A. There are tons of unique and exciting items to bid on during the silent and live auctions. The items range from a Luxury Villa in Anguilla for 4 or 5 couples and signed sports memorabilia to sweet and creative class projects and fun gift baskets---and everything in between. There is truly something for everyone!
Q. Do I have to buy anything at the event to attend?
A. You don’t have to buy anything, but it’s always fun to shop. In any event, you will have a wonderful evening so stop worrying and come join the fun.
Q. Can I charge my auction purchases?
A. All items will be paid for in full the night of the auction. Your credit card may be swiped at check-in (if you haven't already authorized it during online registration) and receipt of purchases, along with anything you have won—will be taken home with you that evening. If larger items need to be held or delivered, we will arrange that for you that night.
Q. How can I donate an item for the event?
A. Click here be directed to the Donation Page which is very simple to fill out. Then drop your item off to the office or if you need us to pick it up, we would be happy to do so. Just let us know!
Q. Is our donation tax deductible?
A. Yes, to the extent that the law allows. You will receive a letter acknowledging your donation after the auction as well as St. Bernard Academy's tax identification number.
Q. What is an auction sponsor or underwriter?
A. Sponsors support the auction by helping to underwrite the cost of the event or a specific portion, such as bars or lounge areas. Both sponsorship and underwriting opportunities are available and include varying levels of recognition for your support. Click here to be directed to the sponsorship page for options on what sponsorship opportunities are available. Sponsors and underwriters receive tickets and other benefits as part of their sponsorship as well, so it’s very worth it to consider a sponsorship!
